Marina was born into the subterranean Octarian civilization, where she attended elite military training from an early age and designed weapons for the army. An honor student, she attained celebrity status among her peers by adulthood and became close friends with fellow student Acht. Her life changed upon hearing the Squid Sisters' song "Calamari Inkantation," prompting her to desert the army and escape to the surface. There, she met musician Pearl while the latter practiced vocals on a secluded mountain. After listening to Marina's work-in-progress demo (which was not yet titled "Ebb and Flow"), Pearl immediately agreed to establish the band Off the Hook. The duo relocated to Inkopolis to serve as resident idols, performing songs in the game's hub world and communicating stage availability through an in-universe news broadcast.

In Their Own Story

In Splatoon 2, Marina co-hosts the Inkopolis News with Pearl, replacing Callie and Marie. During Splatfests, she backs one of two opposing teams; for the final "Chaos vs. Order" event, she represented Team Order while Pearl backed Team Chaos, though Team Chaos ultimately claimed victory. In the Octo Expansion DLC, Marina communicates with Agent 8 trapped in a deep sea metro system. If the player fails a challenge twice, Marina offers to rewire the security system to skip it. She and Pearl also provide background narrative via digital chat logs and aid Agent 8 against Commander Tartar. Later, in Splatoon 3's Side Order DLC, Marina is the creator of the virtual Memverse but goes missing. The player controls Agent 8 alongside a drone-form Pearl to rescue her and defeat the rogue AI Order.
